On Counting Cheaters (reprise)

During wipe 12.11 I had a number of very suspicious encounters that I found very discouraging. I strongly suspected cheating. I even wrote a bit about it and ways to possibly estimate the numbers of cheaters: knowing

But so far in wipe 12.12 I've only had one that strongly struck me as cheating at the time, and another occurrence that seemed coincidental, where I was pretty sure there was a cheater on the map but didn't necessarily think that my killer was the same.  Overall, a much better wipe than 12.11.

I read on Reddit at the beginning of the month that there had been a ban wave ( ban_wave_today ). I didn't think much about it at the time, except "good riddance".  But today I started thinking about something. When you search for a tarkov username you can see their current level - but if they no longer exist in the system, there is no match.  Now the question is "why might someone not be in the system anymore?"  There are a couple possible answers. Perhaps they changed their username. That might remove their old one. (Maybe, I don't actually know).   Or perhaps they were banned, in which case it definitely seems like their username would be removed from the system.

I don't know if you know this, but I have a blog where I track everyone who I manage to kill and loot and everyone who kills me.  So I gathered up all the user names of the people that have killed me during this wipe and I looked them up.  Some observations:

  • As of yesterday I've run 79 raids, 29 of which occurred after the ban wave.
  • At the time the ban wave, February 2, 2022, I had run 50 raids.
  • I've been killed by other players 24 times this wipe.
  • 10 people have killed me since the ban wave.  All of them, except one, still has an active user name in the system.  The one exception is from the first raid I ran after the ban wave, three days later.
  • Of the 14 people who killed me before the ban wave, 4 no longer have active user names. For whatever reason.
  • All 19 of my killers who still have active user names are higher level than I am now, excepting one (who is still Level 2).
The one killer this wipe I was "pretty sure" was a cheater also no longer has an active user name. And the time I was pretty sure there was a cheater on the map (loot vacuumed) I later died (quickly) to someone who now also no longer has an active user name (though I did not think that death was suspicious at the time).

Anyway, make of that what you will.

Field of Fire of Emplaced Weapons at Lighthouse USEC Base, for BEARS

On the new Lighthouse map, the USEC rogues are very aggressive against BEARS and will sight on you out to 300 meters or more, and will fire on you far quicker than they will on a USEC PMC.  The fixed guns are particularly dangerous as they can kill you with a single hit when you might not even realize you are close to the base. I made a map with some fields of fire noted on it. There are two mounted machine guns on building 1 , two mounted machine guns and a grenade launcher on building 2 , and a single machine gun on building 3 .  Plus there is a mounted machine gun and grenade launcher on the southwest corner of the base (lower right on this map).  I have noted the general field of fire of each of these weapons on the map. Obviously, there is a lot of cover, so just because you are standing in a red zone on this map doesn't necessarily mean you can be seen and hit. BUT, if there is any sort of line of sight (including through trees, bushes, walls and vehicles) and you a...

Quest for Beta! Raid 115

I have a big announcement to share: I have decided to pursue acquiring secure container beta!!   Yes, I know that's not as impressive as acquiring kappa, or gamma, or epsilon, but I need to set realistic achievable goals.  I could just buy a beta container on the flea market, they were going for about 750K rubles last I checked. But I want to do this properly: barter trade with Peacekeeper. In exchange for a beta container Peacekeeper wants 3 Iridiums 2 Virtexes 3 Military Cables 1 Tank Battery That's a lot of military tech, which means I need to go where there are multiple military tech spawns, which means Reserve.  The rules for this quest is that I have to find each of those items in raid, but, for every PMC I kill (starting today) I will allow myself to reward myself by buying one of the items off the flea market.  Also, some of those items are craftable, and if I'm in a bind I'll allow myself to craft them, but only using 75% or more found-in-raid ingredien...

Raid 36 - The Bunker - Level 12

I've been practicing offline lately - trying to get better at tackling Raiders. I streamed several of those offline raids as well, and learned some things: I tend to keep my weapon aimed too low, when aiming down sight and leaning out I'm not lining up the shot right, and streaming sometimes introduces performance hiccups into my gameplay. So I did not stream todays raid. And the end of last wipe, I would often practice fighting Raiders. They are usually in sets of three, and so when practicing I would typically kill the three in the bunker, pull the switch for D2, which would spawn three more, kill those, then go outside, pull the hermetic door switch, which would spawn more three more raiders near the train station and then go die trying to take those on. But right now this wipe I'm only level 11 and don't have access to the flea market. So I have to make-do with the armor, ammo and weaponry at hand, and that is a struggle. But, after several days practice, I can now...
