Update: Raid 79 - Shoreline Signal Source Success

Most of my quests are just "find shit". I still need Emelya-brand croutons (not Borodinskiy-brand) for the Jaeger, white armor for Skier (how have I not found that yet?), and countless small things for everyone else. I only have three quests that aren't just loot-and-get-lucky:

  • locate signal source on Shoreline (Mechanic)
  • kill 15 scavs on Customs (Therapist)
  • delivery from the past - (re)obtain package on Customs (Prapor)
The last two quests both take place on Customs and I can pursue them in tandem. I went and bought the director's office key from the flea market. So I'm ready for that.  But, truth be told, I like Shoreline better and that sounds more fun.

Further, I saw a couple of streamers say that night raids are easier for finishing quests, because fewer players. Night raid? I've never done one - sounds exciting and scary and new.  Fewer players? You had me at "easier".  So I bought myself an Armasight N-15 night vision setup.  Let's give this a whirl. What's the worst that can happen?

Raid 79

Location: Shoreline
Goals:
  • venture to weather station and the roof of the resort
  • kill scavs as encountered
  • avoid players
  • survive and extract
Loadout: Trooper class 4 armor.   "Wilbur", my modded VPO-209 with a Valday scope and canted sight. three 30-round magazines, two of .366 AP and one with .366 TKM FMJ.  The tiny "Kurz" MP5 SMG in my rig, hotkeyed, one extra 20 round mag.  Mix of AP 6.3 and Pst gzh.  Two grenades. Meds. Day pack with water, food and splint. CMS kit, IFAK and Ibuprofen in secure container.

Insurance: 63K (that's high - the armor?)

Unless I spawn right behind the resort, my plan is to hit the weather station first, and then the resort and then see if I can extract through rock passage.  Hopefully by the time I hit resort any serious PMC will be on their way to extract.

Spawned in some trees. Turned on the night vision. After bit of reconnaissance realized I was somewhere near CCP Temporary.  Started towards weather station.   I really don't know this map well enough yet. I didn't get lost, but I found myself at the rock arch unexpectedly.  Cool.  Let's go up to weather station and work my around the outside fence - don't rush in. It was supposed to have been 4:30 am or so when the raid started, but the sky was already lightening.  The sun was rising above Road to Customs (does that mean they have adjusted the North/South orientation again? - I forgot to check).  The light was streaming into my night vision gear, so I had to turn it off.  I entered the fence behind the little shack.  A scav ran somewhere on the other side and shouted. But it didn't fire.  I leaned out of cover but with the dawn light in my eyes, couldn't see much.  The scav fired and missed me, but I caught sight of his muzzle flash. I switched to the scope and headshotted him.  Quiet. He was on the other side of the fence - I'll deal with his body later.  I scooted around the other shack - no sign of anyone near the building. I approached the radar dishes, but no "task complete" sound. Hmmm.

Suddenly a Scav shouted and began shooting and hitting me. I ran to the cover of the truck. Took me a second to spot him - he was crouched near the garbage and in this pre-dawn gray was nearly invisible.  I killed him, but it wasn't elegant and I was further wounded, he blacked both my arms.  Damn.  I hid in a bush and medded.  Thank goodness I swapped to a full CMS kit before this raid.  I searched the scav - no white armor, no grenades. Went into the building - sure there would be another scav inside, but it was empty. Looted the safe (slim pickings) and exited. I found the radar dish ("Subtask complete"), looted the first scav (no white armor either), and made my way to resort.

The dawn was now blooming full. I put the NVG into my backpack - no sense having it stick up above my head like a little flag. I ate my sprats and drank half my water.  I crossed the river on the little sightseeing platform directly below the resort. I really don't know this map well. Should I go straight up to the resort and its pavilion, or should I stay below?  I have a printout of the map next to my desk. I'd really rather stay below, but I know there will be scavs at the little bus station - can I thread that needle?

Just as the road dropped into the station I clambered up the rocks and began the ascent to the corner of the resort. And not a moment too soon - someone began firing on me. I ducked down between the rocks and continued.

I peeked the pavilion - no sign of anyone.  I went up into the resort, up the staircase, onto the roof and over to the radar dish.  "Subtask complete".  Searched the cases up there on the roof, but they were empty, which is fine.  (I'm not positive, but I think the amount of loot on a map is directly proportional to the number of players on it.)

I tried using the roof to look at the little scav military river crossing and the rock passage. No sign of anyone. Can I see the campfire / smoke for rock passage from here? I've never used that extract, so I don't know what to look for.

Made my way out and down. No scavs at their crossing. And went to the corner where the river meets the map edge and no extract. Guess rock passage is closed.

I crossed the scav military bridge - all quiet. Isn't there a lootable container here somewhere? I couldn't find it and didn't care enough to hunt it.  How should I make my way to Tunnel?  Follow the wall, like a noob? Seems like a plan.

I began following the wall - going from tree to tree, cover to cover, concealment to concealment, but not too slowly - I only have ten minutes or so to get off the map.  In some woods I spotted a scav walking towards me.  Correction - two scavs. I took cover behind a tree and we traded fire and I started taking damage.  Correction - there are three scavs and the third one is flanking me.  Shit. I don't need this fight.  I got a bead on the flanker and took him down. Then I fled, heading directly into the heart of the map - trying to keep ridges and trees between me and the scavs behind. They didn't pursue. I took a quick shelter and medded and drank the rest of my water.

Did I mention how I don't know this map well?  I started heading in the direction of the sea shore - I know vaguely that scavs patrol the roads I'll be crossing, have ambuscades set up on the rocks it passes near, and this might take me close to Sanitar's vacation home. And sure enough, scavs somewhere to my left began yelling and firing, but I kept to low ground and kept moving and evaded them.

Ultimately, I reached sea road. I scoped it. No sign of anyone at scav island. Dead scav in the middle of the road - hard to say but it doesn't look like he has white armor on.   No sign of anyone at the little checkpoint. No sign of any scav lurking in the vehicles near the final crossroad.  I hoofed it to the exfil unmolested and extracted.

Time In Raid: 45 minutes, 54 seconds  (palindrome!)
Exp: 2070
Kills: Toha Haron, Fedya Baton, and Mishgan Piton.  Godspeed gentlemen.
Ammo Used: 10  Hits: 9  Accuracy: 0.6  Damage to Body: 455  Damage to Armor: 57

In that last encounter, got hit with 7.62x39mm PS in both arms and 12x70mm buckshot.

Mistakes

  • forgot about "fast time" in Tarkov. The night was lost before I reached my first destination.
  • combat with second set of scavs was not smooth.  I practice offline with them set to "Impossible" and I am usually much more fluid taking them down.  Two of my three battles were ungainly today.
  • disoriented on map - lack of map knowledge, especially on "village" side.
  • that last battle with scavs was quite bad. Fleeing was definitely the right decision given my performance. But disappointing to have not handled them more readily.
  • need to know what to look for at the rock passage extract.
  • minimal loot

Successes

  • completed all the goals for the raid!
  • had fun
  • managed time well
  • killed some scavs

Field of Fire of Emplaced Weapons at Lighthouse USEC Base, for BEARS

On the new Lighthouse map, the USEC rogues are very aggressive against BEARS and will sight on you out to 300 meters or more, and will fire on you far quicker than they will on a USEC PMC.  The fixed guns are particularly dangerous as they can kill you with a single hit when you might not even realize you are close to the base. I made a map with some fields of fire noted on it. There are two mounted machine guns on building 1 , two mounted machine guns and a grenade launcher on building 2 , and a single machine gun on building 3 .  Plus there is a mounted machine gun and grenade launcher on the southwest corner of the base (lower right on this map).  I have noted the general field of fire of each of these weapons on the map. Obviously, there is a lot of cover, so just because you are standing in a red zone on this map doesn't necessarily mean you can be seen and hit. BUT, if there is any sort of line of sight (including through trees, bushes, walls and vehicles) and you a...

Quest for Beta! Raid 115

I have a big announcement to share: I have decided to pursue acquiring secure container beta!!   Yes, I know that's not as impressive as acquiring kappa, or gamma, or epsilon, but I need to set realistic achievable goals.  I could just buy a beta container on the flea market, they were going for about 750K rubles last I checked. But I want to do this properly: barter trade with Peacekeeper. In exchange for a beta container Peacekeeper wants 3 Iridiums 2 Virtexes 3 Military Cables 1 Tank Battery That's a lot of military tech, which means I need to go where there are multiple military tech spawns, which means Reserve.  The rules for this quest is that I have to find each of those items in raid, but, for every PMC I kill (starting today) I will allow myself to reward myself by buying one of the items off the flea market.  Also, some of those items are craftable, and if I'm in a bind I'll allow myself to craft them, but only using 75% or more found-in-raid ingredien...

On "The Video"

No doubt, anyone following Tarkov has seen the video from Goat:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5LfGcDB7Ek If you've read my blog before, you know I've tried tracking cheaters in the past by checking all my kills and killers in the in-game chat tool over time. I made several posts, the last of which was this one:  https://itarkovpoorly.blogspot.com/2022/06/counting-cheater-part-4.html My take on the video?  The reason it's called "The wiggle that killed tarkov" is because if cheaters are signaling each other via wiggling, it means there is a CULTURE of cheating and cheaters. And that's the shocking thing. It's not just "some people cheat", it's that there is a whole CULTURE of people cheating, with their own set of spoken/unspoken rules, behaviors, norms and manners. And if you've got a whole culture around something, then it's likely widespread and endemic. And disappointing.  Someone made the remark on Reddit that watching the vi...
